A one-on-one mentoring program for Dubbo College Delroy Campus students has proved a winner, with students celebrating the conclusion of the program this week.

The Youth Frontiers Mentoring program began mid-year, with 10 students paired with mentors from local businesses for two terms. Local member Troy Grant, who was there at program’s inception in July, returned to present the students with certificates to mark their achievements, during a ceremony earlier today.

Mentors from businesses including Elders, Dubbo City Toyota and the Royal Flying Doctor Service met with students once a week for one hour, over 20 weeks.

As well as developing and fostering relationships, students were also engaged in community visits including a trip to the Royal Flying Doctor base, the Dubbo Police Station, Dubbo Base Hospital, Westhaven and the local Dulcidene bull sale.

Students gained an insight into the work force and progressed several steps closer to achieving their own goals, with the support of their mentor.

Dubbo College Delroy Campus student support officer Esther Behsman who oversaw the program, said its success in 2018 would ensure future students would also have access to the mentoring program.

“It’s been very successful and the students feel they have really learned a great deal from their mentors,” Mrs Behsman said.

“We were privileged to run the program at Delroy and we are very grateful to FACS for funding Youth Frontiers.

“The program is specially designed to help support 12 to 16-year-olds to achieve their goals by fostering relationships through one-on-one role modelling.”
