The AVID (advancement Via Individual Determination) educational program is reaping strong rewards at Dubbo College.
AVID focuses on the "how" of learning, not just the content. Knowing how to learn is critical to the future success of all students at every level of education. AVID provides students with solid life-long learning strategies, including ways of thinking and working, and the vital tools for working. It focuses on learning skills, like note-taking, to help students critically analyse and retain information. The program involves students in a weekly tutorial session in each subject to clarify understanding and reflect on the week's work.
AVID is operating in all classes at all campuses, nurturing student potential and teaching students to retain and critically analyse information.
Originating in the United States, the program is now operating at 28 primary, secondary and tertiary sites throughout Australia.
At Dubbo College AVID is run by specially trained teaching staff who work to improve student engagement and accountability. Classes are based on very simple but sound and effective teaching strategies, with students working in an ordered, organised way.
According to the teachers, students find comfort in consistency and this program helps to provide a very consistent class environment. Students study English, mathematics, HSIE – history and geography - and science under the AVID program.
