Dubbo College Senior Campus vice-captain Marty Jeffrey has been awarded a community rookie contract with the Sydney Sixers' cricket side in the Big Bash League.
The 17-year-old Year 12 student and Dubbo RSL Colts first grade player was awarded the contract on the back of brilliant performances for Sydney Thunder and Sydney Sixers during this year's Indigenous Cup.
Both a leg spinner and a classy batsman, Jeffrey said he owed much of his success in cricket to his dad Mick Jeffrey, who had encouraged and supported him in the sport since age five.
"Dad has been a great coach and mentor to both myself and my older brother Michael," Jeffrey said.
"Without the support of my parents I wouldn't be in this position so I really owe them a lot.
"The contract with the Sixers means I will be part of the playing roster, as well as training regularly with the team and going to all home games.
"I expect to be training through most of the upcoming school holidays, with the first game set down for December 20 at the SCG."
While Jeffrey is hoping to have a future in cricket, he is also focused on his Higher School Certificate in 2017.
"I intend to get through the HSC and hopefully study physiotherapy at the University of Sydney," Jeffrey said.
"I would like to pursue grade cricket in Sydney and it would be brilliant if I could earn a place in the NSW under 19s side, then perhaps the national side."
Jeffrey sees his Sydney Sixers' contract as a great opportunity to learn more about the game from top Australian players.
